Ghostly figure in upper-right window of house on North Street. Patrice Hatcher Photography.

Browne added in his blog: “Unable to sell or rent the Capt. Phillips House, Cotton decided to move into it with his family on March 29, 1734. The Cottons never saw or heard any ghosts. It took some time, but the excitement and rumors eventually dissipated. In November 1739, Cotton managed to rent the house and he moved back to his North Plymouth farm.”44

So, is the Captain Thompson Phillips mansion haunted? If recent events are any indication, yes.

“I talked to a woman who lived in one of the upstairs apartments,” said Vicki. “She said that her door would open and shut on its own.”

Psychic Patrice Hatcher added to the intrigue of the Phillips House when she told of a ghostly figure she saw in one of the upstairs windows of the house next door. “I was playing tourist in Plymouth, one of my favorite things to do. I was on a walking ghost tour, and we had just finished up learning about the Captain Phillips House. I looked at the house right next door and saw a person in the window! It was so visible, so I took a picture of it. If the Phillips House is not haunted, then the one next door is most certainly haunted.”

Plymouth’s North Street, located at Shirley Square where Court and Main Streets meet, is one of the town’s most haunted streets. “Every single building on that street has a story,” commented Vicki.

Chapter 2 of this book, “Plymoutheans,” describes Patrice’s experiences when she had her shop, Ishtar’s Avalon, on North Street. In the same chapter, the hauntings of the Spooner House (27 North Street) are discussed at great length by Vicki. If those stories haven’t convinced the reader that North Street is haunted, allow me to provide further evidence of spectral beings and spooky situations that cannot be explained.

Vicki described an experience she had on a guided tour led by a competitor. Curious to get a different perspective, she attended the tour that evening.

“The story goes that if you knock on the door of a particular Federal-style house on North Street, someone or something knocks back.” She continued, “My son was on the tour with me, and he was brave enough to take a chance, so he knocked on the door. Nothing happened.” Vicki added, “But I took a picture, and in that picture is an image of a little girl and an image of a man in a tri-cornered hat. If you look hard, you can also see the eyes of a cat in the picture. Now, the cat can be debunked, but not the little girl and not the man in the tricorn hat.”

“There is an apartment on the second story of that house,” Vicki continued. “I met someone who lived on the second floor, and he didn’t stay there very long. He said there was a man on the stairs who would follow him to the shower, and he didn’t like it very much.
